Christmas is a HUGE deal for me, and I have many traditions that I implement into the holiday season- some that I’ve carried with me from childhood, but some I’ve come up with as an adult to create a deeper connection with my family. The candlelit Christmas story is one of them….
Where I found this lovely tradition
Just after my husband and I got married I was reading the free magazine that Focus On The Family sends out in the mail. They had a special Christmas article with family friendly things you could order so of course I was indulging. Christmas is my favourite season by far!
One of the items for sale was a candle lit christmas story kit. At the time it wasn’t something I could ever afford, but after looking into it I realized I could make the same thing myself! So I got online (which even in 2014 things on the internet were soooo different!) and found all of my own songs, wrote my own narrative, and my own storyline, and gathered candles from around my house to make it work.
It took me FOREVER to make everything on good ol’ Word doc, but we used this version I made for years.
Now that I’m diving into this amazing experience of sharing things on my little website, I wanted to do a complete overhaul of the candlelit Christmas story and re create a modern, printer friendly, downloadable version so that I could get this beautiful experience into as many hands as possible!
And that’s what I want to give you this holiday season my friends. Everything you need (except the candles) to start this tradition in your family. Skip the hours of creating that I had to do back in 2014 and grab the whole thing here, in its updated and printer friendly format!

What is a candlelit Christmas story?
The candlelit Christmas story is an interactive version of the biblical christmas story of Jesus birth.
There are candles set up that represent different characters in the story being told. And then the “story” which includes classic christmas songs and verses from the bible is read aloud by a narrator, and songs are sung by all.
As the story progresses each candle is lit until all of them are glowing. The story continues and slowly each candle is blown out, ending with only the last candle burning- the candle representing baby Jesus.
It truly is a beautiful experience, and something everyone in the family can be apart of!
What you need;
The list is quite simple, all you need is
- candles
- matches or a lighter
- the story (found right here)
- people to enjoy this with
- optional and what we do; a full copy for every person participating
We choose to do this tradition as close to christmas day as possible, sometimes the weekend before or a few times we’ve done it right on Christmas eve.
It’s a wonderful time of celebration and reflection on the true meaning of Christmas.
Enjoy this super fun experience friends, and Merry Christmas!
