Hey there, I’m Micheon!

Welcome to my blog; A Lovely Place Called Home! This is the place I share my passions, creativity and my life as an off grid stay-at-home and work-from-home wife and mother.

We live in the canadian wilderness, wayyy back in the forest. We are completely off grid, meaning we get our power from the sun, catch rainwater and also collect water from our river, we heat using wood harvested from our property and live in the tiny house on wheels that we built ourselves.

We vegetable garden, own dairy cows, keep ducks for meat and eggs, a few layer chickens to keep it interesting, and raise free range heritage pigs. We are currently working on building out pastures, planting an orchard, and figuring out how to keep the abundance of black bear from getting into the feed bins!

Our home is full of energy and creativity. We are a homeschooling (more like life schooling/forest schooling) family of six, and our four children were born within five years of each other! Its safe to say that my house is NEVER fully clean, and I haven’t gotten a full nights sleep in forever. But the love is abundant, and my children are loved and cherished.

Some more about Me:

I’m the wife to the man I met when I was just fifteen years old! We were best friends for almost three years before we started dating, and we got married shortly after. He’s still my best friend and we do almost everything together. From motor sports, to building stuff, to playing card games late at night after the kids have fallen asleep. We love being together! He even milks the cow with me. And can I just say there’s nothing better than milking a cow with your best friend.

I grew up in the forest and spent my childhood either playing outside in the woods with my little sister, or watching/helping build our family log home. I look back on my childhood with so many fond memories, I was (and still am!) truly blessed.

Creating things is a deep passion of mine. Whether that be by designing, crafting, homesteading, cooking, or any other way I can use my imagination! I hope to share that creativity with others and help them create a lovely home as well.

Random Fun Facts About Me:

I LOVE dark rainy days. Gloomy rain days are by far my favourite kind of weather, I feel energized by it!

I worked as the head baker in a successful bakery in my community. It was an amazing experience.

I’m obsessed with thrift shopping!

The first man I kissed was my husband. He was my best friend- who became my first boyfriend, and we saved our first kiss for our wedding day!

I’ve been featured in several commercials for hunting and driving off road vehicles. I’ve also been featured in a hunting documentary!

I actually go into a lot more detail about why I’m in this space over on this page of my blog. You can get a more indepth view into what I’m trying to share with you all!

Thank you for taking an interest and stopping by our lovely off grid homestead!

A Lovely Place Called Home

This podcast is a practical tool for your homesteading toolbelt. Each episode walks through the real numbers, systems, and decisions behind building a working homestead — not the aesthetic version, the functional one. We break down cost analyses, infrastructure planning, off-grid setups, livestock math, garden yields, land considerations, and whether an idea actually makes financial and logistical sense for your life.

If you’ve ever wondered “Could we really do this?” — this is where we run the numbers and find out. No hype. No fantasy. Just clear thinking, grounded strategy, and honest evaluation so you can build something stable, sustainable, and strong for your family.

How To Set Up Your First Raised Bed Garden & Succeed Year ONE Ep.11
byMicheon Hutchings

If you’ve been wanting to start a vegetable garden but feel overwhelmed by where to begin, what to plant, or how to make it work, this episode is for you.

In this episode, I’m walking you through exactly how to set up your first raised bed vegetable garden in a way that is simple, realistic, and built for success in your very first year.

This isn’t about building a massive garden or trying to grow everything all at once. It’s about creating a system you can actually manage, maintain, and harvest from consistently without burning out halfway through the season.

I break down the exact raised bed sizes I recommend, how many beds you should realistically start with, and how to set them up so they’re efficient and easy to work in. We talk about soil in a way that makes sense for beginners, including what matters, what doesn’t, and how to avoid wasting money on unnecessary inputs.

I also walk through what crops you should focus on in year one if your goal is success, confidence, and food on your table, not frustration and failure.

You’ll learn why most beginner gardens don’t make it past mid-summer, the common mistakes that quietly ruin momentum, and how to avoid them by simplifying your approach from the start.

This episode is built around real-life gardening, not picture-perfect plans, and is designed for busy people, families, and anyone trying to build a more self-sufficient lifestyle without overcomplicating it.

Whether you’re starting on a homestead, in a backyard, or even just a small space, this gives you a clear path forward so you can actually follow through and see results. By the end of this episode, you’ll know exactly how to start, what to focus on, and how to build a raised bed garden that works with your life, not against it, so that your first year is not just a learning experience, but a successful one!
